There is something incredible happening here in Denver. A group of 12 women, busy with motherhood, careers, and the big and little of life’s challenges, are cooking together in teams of two or three. It all started when my closest friend from high school, Alison Bermack, told me about the fun she was having with her friends in New Jersey making soups, granola, chicken and many other foods. It solved a problem – the what’s for dinner question. But even more it brought her and her friends closer together. I asked a few friends here if they’d be interested, and you could see the proverbial lightbulb going off over their heads. It was what they were looking for, even if they didn’t know it before.
Here out West, we have so far had soup, appetizer and cookie swaps. Three of us made 10 lasagnes one afternoon, then invited our husbands and kids to join us for an impromptu dinner party. I’ve heard from these women that Cooking With Friends has helped them fill their freezers, but also to entertain more easily by inviting other friends to an already-cooked dinner, learn new cooking skills and recover that elusive hanging out time we all missed.
One of our group has admittedly not been interested in cooking before, but she has surprised herself with how much she loved learning to roast peppers and work with dumpling dough. Our group has an exciting year ahead with more communal cooking planned and I so look forward to the time spent stirring, chopping and talking. The more you cook with friends, the more it feels natural to spend time in each others’ kitchens, to start a “bonus meal” when you have extra ingredients and to create an impromptu meal when a friend drops by. It really does become part of your life.
