Cooking together works for all kinds of people–young, old, men, women, those who work outside the home and stay-at-home moms. This past week I was so excited to see my daughter’s class of four- and five-year-olds creating a simple but beautiful dish, Friendship Fruit Salad.
Instead of bringing candy on Valentine’s Day, each child in the class brought in one piece of fruit. Together they used butter knives to carefully cut the 20 oranges, pears, grapes, bananas, apples and other fruit, then mixed it together in a big communal bowl for a delicious, healthy treat. Along the way, they laughed and talked and shared, the way I do when I cook with my grown-up friends.
When the Friendship Fruit Salad was served, the kids gobbled it up with such glee, in large part because they had been invited into the process of making the food and enjoyed the time with their friends.
