Blog it Forward to Fight Hunger — Your comments = Food!

Always willing to support a good cause, Shannon and I have decided that the Cooking With Friends Club will participate in the “Blog it Forward to Fight Hunger” initiative being led by Shoprite in conjunction with General Mills. As our members and readers, you can show your support by posting a comment on our blog. General Mills and ShopRite will donate one box of cereal to a food bank in ShopRite’s trading area for each of the first 30 people who comment. How’s that for bang for the buck!

Let me start by saying how much I like my local ShopRite, which is 100% committed to our community. They consistently show their support by donating year after year to our school bake sales, often with hundreds of cupcakes. Their food is fresh, the prices are reasonable and the stores are consistently clean.

Here are some hard-to-fathom facts about hunger:

More than 36 million Americans go to bed hungry every night — 12 million of them children. Right in my home state of NJ, 7.7% of the population doesn’t know when their next meal will be. This condition, sometimes called “food insecurity,” affects 2 million elderly people as well. It causes weakened immune systems, depression and can impede development.

Ten years ago, ShopRite created a fantastic program called ShopRite Partners in Caring. ShopRite customers have an opportunity to donate by purchasing products that have Partners in Caring tags. When they do so, they are supporting a product (and company) that is fighting hunger by donating some of the proceeds to this program. More than fifty manufacturers support ShopRite’s program. Since 1999, more than $20 million dollars has been donated to various organizations in need, including 23 food banks and 1,400 charitable agencies.
If you live in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania or Maryland, you can help by shopping at ShopRite and purchasing items with the “Shoprite Partners in Caring” store tag.

Regardless of where you live, please post your support of such a program in the comments section of this blog entry. General Mills and ShopRite will donate a box of Cheerios to a local food bank for each of the first 30 people to post a comment.

  4. Great idea, Shannon and Alison!
    One way Shoprite could help to fight hunger is helping people in need to learn how to cook with nutrition and price in mind. They have great portable kitchens where cooking classes for free could be taught. People from the community could volunteer their time. Just an idea.

  5. Every area has a food pantry of some sort, here
    we have St. Josephs Food Pantry. We don’t have
    a Foodrite, so I suggest that those who don’t,
    support their local food pantry. Clean out your
    pantry for items you haven’t used, but are still
    good and make a donation. Of course, money is
    always welcome, as here we can purchase food from
    the Gleaners at a very low rate to add to our
    pantry supplies.

  6. What a great idea! Nothing breaks my heart more than thinking about children going to bed hungry. It’s a wake up call about how wasteful we are on a daily basis!

  9. This is a wonderful thing to support! I hope General Mills will donate some of its gluten free cereals, like any of the Chex products. Can’t imagine being hungry and having food allergies…

  25. “Great Work,Ladies”!! I live in Southern Miss.,and I know what it means,when help comes,and we saw many church,states,food brands,and people,they are a wonderful thing too see when your down!! I live in the country,and the towns got most all the help,but what came through for many of us,was Salvation Army and Red Cross.Prayers and real help is so wonderful!! JIM-49

  28. I shop regularly at my local Shoprite. I love that store and they are always doing something for the community. This is a wonderful cause. As a matter of fact, one of the food shelters on the other side of our county has closed it’s doors due to lack of food and donations. Let’s keep the food banks going. Thanks, Ladies!
