Sometimes a cooking invitation comes through a phone call or evite, other times a friend might just drop by or ask “have you ever made…?”
I just got a wonderful invitation. A new friend gave me a silver bowl with seven smaller bowls inside, each containing a fragrant, beautiful spice. There’s cardamom, cinnamon and cloves, and much more. And she said she’d love to help me learn the cooking of her native country, India. I can’t wait.

I hope that when she teaches you, you will teach us. Wow, she may spend a couple of hours with you and then you can reach zillions of cooks. That is the power of the spoon. Kind of her gift not just to you but to cyberspace. I can’t wait to see that post.

Shannon has hit on one of the greatest benefits of cooking with friends. We learn so much about our friends through the foods that have played an important part of their heritages. By cooking together, not only do we broaden our culinary repertoires, but we get to know our friends in ways that wouldn’t be possible outside the kitchen.
