At 7:10 a.m. every weekday morning, I stand on a sidewalk corner a half block from my house with neighborhood parents 12 kids in kindergarten through third grade, waiting for the school bus. These bus stop moms and dads talk about everything from snow pant style to national news. We meet again later in the day.
Lately, one of the discussions has been cooking together. I invited each person to choose a partner, create a Valentine treat, and come to our house tomorrow for a Valentine exchange. Emily and I made heart-shaped brownies. It was definitely the highlight of an otherwise stressful day yesterday–drinking tea in Emily’s kitchen, catching up and baking.
There is much bus stop talk about rum balls, lollipops, aniset cookies….and more. There are tales of late-evening baking with lots of laughing and a little burning of food, searching for the right gluten-free recipe, ideas for cookie decorations and sugar cookie recipes passed down for generations. It is a way for people who know each other in one way to get to know each other a little better. I look forward to tomorrow and wish all of you a wonderful Valentine’s Day!!
