This blog posting was supposed to go up before Christmas but since we didn’t have internet service for ten days, it’s delayed. (I know holiday cookies aren’t the timeliest topic for the New Year!)
I’ll admit as I’ve done before. Cookie decorating does not come naturally to me. I’m not a particularly patient person and care little about miniscule details. But I love doing it with someone else — particularly Christina — a friend who has a passion for precision but also knows my limitations. She graciously includes me in her joy, ultimately enabling me to have some myself.
Last week, feeling overwhelmed with so much to do, I was threatening to cancel my annual cookie decorating date with Christina. But she wouldn’t allow me to back out, adamantly texting me that all I had to do was show up with my pre-baked cookies and sprinkles and she’d have all the icing tinted and ready to go. And so I did.
A rainbow of icing tubes and an endless array of sprinkles were neatly set out on her table. She sat on one end, as I sat on the other, piping, filling, and swirling together. We talked as the time ticked, enjoying an unhurried moment in time during an otherwise fast paced season. We had a few guests as visitors — Lou and Jackie — who joined us for an impromptu gourmet lunch of gnocchi (thanks Lou!) and quiche. I’m grateful for my friend Christina since I not only have spectacular cookies to show for or our time together, but I also have a holiday highlight.
If you’re looking for a no-fail roll out cookie recipe, here’s the one I use year after year.

You’re so sweet Alison! Always great fun decorating cookies with you! And yes Lou…thanks so much for our yummy lunch!
