I’m not sure how time has flown quite the way it has, but it’s already holiday cookie time and another year will soon come to a sweet end. An end-of-year tradition continued for me, as my friends and I gathered this past Sunday at my house to ice and decorate cut out sugar cookies. My dining room table became our make-shift bakery, with rainbows of royal icing, mounds of festively shaped cookies and sprinkles and glitter galore. With steady (and not-so-steady hands for me) we outlined and added personality to our holiday treats. The room shimmered like tinsel as we shook sugar crystals and cast silver gems upon our creations.
During our six hour marathon, we chatted and daydreamed as we lost ourselves in our holiday endeavors. Christina, our professional bakery friend, meticulously detailed her gingerbread people while Jackie and I whimsically (and a bit more carelessly!) adorned stockings, hats, stars, dreidels and menorahs. There was some banter about as Jackie would skip over me and go straight to Christina for her “professional” decorating tips. But it was all in good fun!
Even our kids had a hand in the decorating but their stamina couldn’t keep up with ours. A mere half dozen for each of them and they were eating more than they could produce with their clever creations. At the end of our dazzling, dizzying day, we shook out our tired hands, woke up our sleepy selves and marveled at the hundreds and hundreds of magical cookies set upon every bit of table space and even upon the floor.
Jackie’s parting remark after nearly six hours of crazy cookie decorating sums it all up: “I would never have done this alone!” I will completely and total agree. Me neither. Without my friends to keep me company, guide me through the colorful process of crafting these once-a-year treats, I would not have these exceptional cookies to show and to give as gifts. For now, they wait tucked in my freezer until they are presented to teachers, bus drivers, family and friends.
There’s still time for you to get together with your friends and decorate some cookies. It’s an annual tradition (trust me once a year’s enough!) which has cheerily brought three friends together and is sure to deliver tasty and tantalizing pleasure throughout the holidays.
I used the following roll out cookie dough recipe from All Recipes which I’ve been using for years. I do add two teaspoons vanilla extract however.
